The National Eligibility Test (NET), also known as UGC NET or NTA-UGC-NET, is the test for determining the eligibility for the post of Assistant Professor and/or Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) award in Indian universities and colleges.
UGC NET is considered as one of the toughest exams in India, with success ratio of merely 6%.
Assistant Professors in private colleges may or may not be NET qualified but NET qualification is mandatory for universities & government colleges.
NET vs JRF (Are these different exams?)
National Eligibility Test is conducted by National Testing Agency and is a gateway test in our country to start career as Lecturers or Assistant Professors in various Colleges, Universities and other Educational Institutions.
You can call this Net or Jrf exam.
Both means same because exam is same but the only difference is of cut-off marks.
Those who qualify this exam are categorized in two sections (Students qualified with National eligibility test and students qualified Junior Research Fellowship).
Higher marks lead to qualifying the JRF eligilibility.
UGC grants Junior Research Fellowship to the NET passed out candidates who are interested in research work in various Universities and Colleges.
When the exam is conducted?
This NET (National Eligibility Test) is conducted twice a year i.e. in the months of June and December and the notifications are released in March and September.
Benefits of Qualifying Junior Research Fellowship
Those whose qualify with JRF, they can apply in various institutions for admission to Ph.D. programs.
Moreover, JRF qualification is considered more prestigious as JRF qualified students are entitled to a monthly stipend of around 30,000 p.m. for a period of two years.
On Completion of two years as JRF and if the fellow is registered for PhD, the fellowship is upgraded to SRF (NET) and the stipend is increased to Rs. 40,000/- p.m for the 3rd and subsequent years.
Benefits of Qualifying only for NET
After Qualifying National Eligibility Test(NET) enables a person to be eligible to apply for the position of Lecturer/Assistant Professor in Universities and Colleges located anywhere across India.
The Candidates qualifying Assistant Professor exclusively will not be considered for the award of JRF.
Now a day’s many Corporate companies are opting NET cleared candidates for their vacancies or positions.
After NET you will be eligible for a salary according to the sixth pay commission rule of the Government of India for teaching and lectureship.
